It is necessary to understand deeply that the scarlet letter, which is written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is clearly known for its message to the reader. That is, the writer wants us to understand the real reality of the puritan society which is based on hypocrisy, guilty, revenge and dilemma in the hierarchy. Being so, Nathaniel Hawthorne guides us, as readers, to understand the relationship between Hester and Dimmesdale, the relationship between Hester and her husband, Roger and pearl.
As a starting point, it is of paramount importance to show how Nathaniel Hawthorn makes a severe criticism of the puritan society in the scarlet letter. That is, he starts by showing the main character, Hester, who committed a crime with the representative of the church, Dimmesdale. It means that Nathaniel Hawthorne chose this character in order to imbue his novel with words that lead us to know his criticism toward the puritan society. With this in mind, as Nathaniel succinctly puts it in the scarlet letter: Her prison-door was thrown open, and she came forth into the sunshine. And, he adds the following quote: she hid the secret from herself, and grew pale whenever it struggled out of her heart. Per se, it is necessary to grasp an essential point which is that Hester Prynne hid the secret, and she doesn't want to tell anyone about pearl's father. In other words, if she told the puritan society that secret, they won't be able to believe that the representative of the church who did this crime.
As was suggested vividly about Hester Prynne, it is worth understanding the relationship between Hester Prynne and Dimmesdale. As it appears, Nathaniel Hawthorne chose the two main characters, Hester and Dimmesdale, in order to keep criticising the puritan society. Starting from Hester Prynne and moving to the religious man, Dimmesdale, who was representing the religious in that area. It becomes clearly enough to show him as hypocrite person. As Nathaniel Hawthorne puts it:His guilt was mentally torturing him and drove him to despair.
Let us not forget to talk about Roger chillingworth who is shown as satan or in other words as elvish. Probably not surprisingly, Nathaniel wants to proclaim that the puritan society is full of people who committing a crime and take revenge. To some extent, Roger doesn't show his identity to other people in order to take revenge from the representative of the church. For example, Nathaniel told us in the scarlet letter, as his name suggests, Roger Chillingworth is a man deficient in human warmth. And, he doesn't care about pearl, but he sees her as a symbol of crime even if she is a symbol of moral.
Throughout the previous reading of the scarlet letter. It is of great important to say that Nathaniel Hawthorne criticized the puritan society in his novel. Ad hoc, he showed Hester Prynne as guilty, Dimmesdale as hypocrite person, and Roger chillingworth as satan.
