Broadly speaking, Literature shapes environmental consciousness and
action ; how romantic poetry engages and depicts the urgant condition
between man and nature. As it seems, we are connected to nature more than we
are related to it- that is, we consider our-selves as superior to nature with
objectivizing it and losing our connectedness and one-ness with it. Ostensibly,
this interconnectedness between us and nature is founded in one of the romantic
poem ‘’I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth, the poet of nature, and,
also, in The Grasmere journal by Dorothy Wordsworth. On this basic, this essay
focuses specifically on the category of different visions which I
will show to have a very specific meaning in writing of both ‘’William
wordsworth poem and Dorothy wordsworth’s journal as a particular
that grounds on connectivity to nature ; shows the attributions of non-human qualities to non-human things, compendiously, Dorothy shows
her relating to nature and attempts to depict realistic things.
To start the discussion
with interconnectedness between man and nature throughout William’s poem. From
its beginning, we, as human beings, see the attributions of human qualities to
non human thing’’ I wandered lonely as a Cloud which simply suggest the
loneliness of the poet, man against himself, and he described himself as Cloud;
obviously, this idea suggests a kind of superiority to nature dehumanizing it,
and we consider ourselves as if we have the right to exploit it and consider it
as an object. That is, the poet saw something that really attracted him ‘’when
all at once I saw a crowd ‘’ ,a crowd of daffodils that were under the
trees and next to the lake, emphatically, the daffodils were tossing their
heads from side to side appearing to dance in the breeze or in other words deep
rootedness and deep-relationships and this what give human or the poet’s heart
fills with pleasure and feels his heart is dancing with daffodils. This is the
case with human before we haunted by industialisation and technology, as it
appears, we depend upon the earth and what we do towards our living affects it,
our work affects it, which changed our relationships with nature. As
wordsworth, himself, was connected to nature and, most importantly, he doesn’t
saw the difference in nature ; he is above as cloud ,a kind of
superiority. And, he was looking to nature as a unity. Off course, at that
time, there was no goveronment, no civilization and no exploitation of nature. Accordingly,
this relationships with nature has been changed, and we forgot the happiness
that we can find there in nature as William wordsworth puts it ‘’Tossing
their heads in sprightly dance ‘’ this shows natural elements connected to
each other unlike us, human being, who become materialistic and haunted by
industrial capitalism.
As was stated with
regard to the idea of interconnectedness from nature for william, who connected
himself to nature, but Dorothy Wordsworth journal, as it seems, is regarded
usually as embroidery with some influence on William wordsworth’s poetry; whereas,
the journals place man in nature. To start with, Dorothy, in her journal, characteristically,
gives us the context of what happend and all events, and she speaks of them in
details and says different things about them. Viewed in this way, Dorothy, herself,
writes in her journal some cows people working ..... I never saw daffodils
so beautiful. Curiously, she talks about nature when she uses the pronoun ‘’we’’,
perhaps most importantly,
Dorothy does not put herself in superiority to nature but as a part of it. Presumably,
she is looking at each thing for what it is not as a whole, as one of its
denizens. Correspondingly, for woof , a great writer, viewed dorothy’s
writing as little more than detailed recording of an everyday lived world’. Apparently,
this is the case in her journal ; she is relating to nature as one of its
inhabitants. For us, we are about to see ourselves nowadays that we don’t
relate to nature rather than we
connected with it but this connection based on exploitation and devastation.
William wordsworth
sought to enable his readers better to enjoy or endure life was by teaching
them to look at and dwell in natural world .I borrow this term to dwell from
Martin Heidegger’s etymology which means to remain, to stay in place as mortal
because nature as we see in William’s poem , I Wandered lonely as a Cloud,
is the source of inspiration from where you can grasp jocund and happiness and
in this poem is ecstatic, reifying , abstract, vision of nature from which the
poet emerges as this superior being who can give us that panoramic view of the
world. As humanity develops, haunted by materialism and industrialisation, it
is developed against the natural world, making itself as something superior to
nature. Clearly, that’s why we destroyed a lot of places and exploited natural
resources. For that matter, we only see nature as something we can use for our
own benefits, nature as an object of pleasure. In vision of dorothy, there are
people, things and different types of trees. So, the different visions also express
different positions, within nature. She is paying more attention to details and
adding to this John Clare’s poem is similar to Dorothy’s journal, that is, it
is a text that describes relationships, actions, connections and what is going
on.
Through the previous analysis of
one of the romantic poetry ‘’I Wandered
Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth and The Gresmer Journal by Dorothy
Wordsworth, it seems that william’s poem provide the modern man who lives in
the world i .e haunted by technology and materialism, with a new lens
through which he can see the inseperable relation and harmony between man and nature..on
the other hand, from another vision, Dorothy’s journal provide us to look to nature,
a source of inspiration, in order to be amalgamated with it by relating to it. In
this way, we need to be conserned, to cherich ,to protect, and recursive deep
–relationships and deep –rootedness with our environments .
