THE DRAWBACKS OF TRANSLATION

In the world of teaching, as it seems,  in the beginning of every school-year, we hear foreign language teachers in both Middle and High schools complaining about the low level of their respective students. Indeed, these students are so poorly prepared that teachers find themselves struggling in dealing with them. What is even worse, is that the majority of teachers have been claiming that these students not only have no interest in learning a foreign language but also pressure teachers to translate or simply speak Arabic particularly in secondary level. If you are a foreign language teacher at any level facing the same dilemma in your classroom, my advice to you is to never fall into the trap of translation because it will harm you and your students intellectually in the long run. Viewed in this way, to understand the issue, one has to look back in the history of students and it will not be hard for any teacher to find out that students are asking the teacher to use the native language simply because teachers before were teaching them using the native language.
